Image-Guided Biopsies and Aspirations General Questions

What is an image-guided biopsy?

An image-guided biopsy is a procedure conducted by our expert doctors to take a sample from the patient’s body and send it for testing. The procedure is minimally invasive and can avoid the need for a surgical biopsy. Pathology results are usually available to referrers a few days after the biopsy.

During the biopsy procedure, our doctors place a biopsy needle through the patient’s skin using ultrasound or CT imaging to guide it to the precise area of interest.

What is an image-guided aspiration?

An image-guided aspiration is a procedure used by our doctors to drain or remove fluid or excess fluid. This fluid is often drained to help relieve symptoms and, if required, sent off for testing. The results from the pathology testing are usually available to referrers a few days after the aspiration.

During the aspiration procedure, our doctors place a needle through the patient’s skin using ultrasound or CT imaging to guide it to the precise area where the fluid requires draining.
