Ultrasound General Questions

What is an ultrasound?

Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography, is a specialist diagnostic live imaging method that uses sound waves to produce pictures of the body’s internal area under examination. Ultrasounds provide clear soft tissue pictures that don’t appear on general x-rays.

Why are ultrasounds used?

Ultrasounds are often used to help diagnose and direct treatment for unexplained pain, swelling, infection and various diseases and conditions. They can also assist with image-guided procedures, including biopsies and injections.

Does ultrasound use radiation?

Ultrasound imaging doesn’t use ionising radiation and has no known harmful effects. Because of this, ultrasound is the preferred imaging method for monitoring health and progress during pregnancy.
